First off, a big "shout out" to Wal Baranow of "Mad Men" cigars, who so very generously sent me a gift of five (5) of his latest creation: the "Mad Men" Gordo cigar. I could hardly wait to try one out and review it. In preparation, and to have my taste buds ready for a comparison, I enjoyed a "Mad Men" Toro about 45 minutes before lighting up a Gordo.
"Fat" cigars - 60 ring and larger - are currently trending across the world of cigar smokers, and "In My Humble Opinion," the new "Mad Men" Gordo could certainly contribute to that trend. Everything that I had written about the "Mad Men" Toro in a previous review - construction, presentation, rolling, shouldering, burn, consistency, lack of canoeing in a breeze, etc. - holds true for the new Gordo.
The additional 10/64-inch in diameter, comprised of more Cuban seed filler tobacco, adds one more "big plus": a gentle refinement of flavor. Just as the taste of their Toro was a cut above their Robusto, so too the "Mad Men" Gordo outpaces the Toro in the "taste race." Smoking this Gordo, for me, is extremely pleasurable (I'm certain that it could be paired with almost any adult beverage and deliver a remarkable experience).
In all, "Mad Men" has another hit on its hands. Currently, the Gordo inventory is extremely low and awaiting more cigars from the rollers. It's no wonder; they're that good and desirable. Just as aficionados experience new offerings from all cigar manufacturers, start-up production requires time for inventory build-up. As with those other manufacturers, I am sure that "Mad Men" will overcome the natural "new line inventory build-up blues" inherent to cigar manufacturing and order fulfilment times will match those of their other fine offerings.
